A Hair Transplant Isn't One Step โ It's Several
"My hair transplant was performed by Dr. X" can be true even if Dr. X never touched most of these steps personally. Here's what actually happens.
Consultation
Assessing donor area, hair loss pattern, and planning the approach.
Hairline Design
Marking where the new hairline and density pattern will go โ this shapes the entire aesthetic result.
Extraction (FUE)
Removing individual follicular units from the donor area, one at a time.
Channel Opening
Creating the tiny incisions each graft will be placed into โ the angle and depth here affects both look and graft survival.
Implantation
Placing each extracted graft into the opened channels.
Why Most Clinics Don't Volunteer This Information
Hair transplant technicians can be highly skilled โ many perform thousands of procedures a year and are genuinely experienced with extraction and implantation. That's a real, legitimate part of how the industry operates in high-volume clinics, and it's a major reason a technician-performed procedure is typically priced lower than a doctor-performed one.
The issue isn't that technician-performed treatment is inherently bad โ it's that patients are rarely told clearly which one they're paying for. Marketing photos often show a doctor, consultations are often led by a doctor, and then the actual extraction and implantation is handled by technicians without that being stated upfront.
Ask Before You Book, Not After You Arrive
Ask directly: "Who performs the extraction and implantation on my procedure โ a licensed doctor, or a technician?" A provider that answers this clearly and confidently, and prices the two options differently, is being straightforward with you. Vague or deflected answers are worth taking seriously as a warning sign.
MJB Care's hair transplant calculator lists Specialist-performed and Doctor-performed options separately, each with its own price, so you know which you're booking before you commit โ not something you have to dig for. See the pricing.
